The former is made with natural clay that is dried into granules. With this type of litter, the pet owner can scoop out solid waste everyday but he will have to empty out the litter box every week.

Clumping litter, on the other hand, is easy to scoop out as it will stick together when urinated on. However, not all clay-based clumping litter is flushable, so one should also choose between the flushable and non-flushable kind of clumping cat litter.

With this type of litter, the owner does not have to replace the litter every week; he just has to add more of the product if the level of the litter gets too low from scooping out too much. He should replace all the litter and wash the litter box after a month of use.

Owners should also take note that flushable cat litter is normally made from materials that
can easily be broken down such as pine, cellulose or plant fiber, recycled newspaper and
wheat fiber. This kind of litter has both negative and positive qualities when compared to
regular clay-based cat litter.

Cat owners should also choose between scented and unscented litters. While unscented cat
litter is just as effective as the scented one, most people still prefer the scented variation to
control odors better.
