How Cat Litter Works

Classic Litter
The way classic litter works, is that it’s a mix of absorbent clay that can absorb its own weight in urine. The clay breaks away the urine, which is the cause of the odor, and traps it with ammonium ions after chemically altering it. After the litter has reached its saturation point, the urine drains to the bottom of the box. Some manufacturers of kitty litter add in baking soda and other odor fragrances to mask the smell.
Clumping Litter
Clumping kitty litter made from bentonite clay. It contains sodium, calcium ,aluminum, magnesium or iron. What makes clumping litter different is that it contains the bentonite mineral. The ions from this clay substance have a higher hydration sphere and are able to absorb more than classic or traditional kitty litter. Because of this natural reaction, the litter clumps together when it becomes moist, which make it easy to scoop out for kitty owners.
